3D and Gender Reveal Ultrasounds

3D Ultrasound

Advanced Prenatal Imaging for Enhanced Clarity

A 3D ultrasound provides a detailed, three-dimensional view of your baby, offering a clearer and more defined image than traditional 2D ultrasounds. This advanced imaging technology allows both patients and providers to visualize fetal features and movements with greater accuracy and depth.

Purpose and Benefits

While 2D ultrasounds remain the standard for most diagnostic purposes, 3D imaging can offer additional insight into fetal anatomy and development. These enhanced images may assist in evaluating certain facial structures, extremities, or the umbilical cord when clinically indicated. Many parents also appreciate the opportunity to view realistic images of their baby as part of a positive bonding experience during pregnancy.

What to Expect During the Procedure

A 3D ultrasound is performed in the same safe and noninvasive manner as a standard ultrasound. A trained sonographer will apply a conductive gel to the abdomen and use a transducer to capture multiple images that are then processed into a three-dimensional rendering. The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes and does not involve radiation or any known risks to the mother or baby.

Recommended Timing

Optimal visualization for a 3D ultrasound generally occurs between 26 and 32 weeks of gestation. During this period, fetal structures are well developed, and sufficient amniotic fluid is present to produce high-quality images.

Results and Follow-Up

You will be able to review the images during your visit, and your provider can discuss any relevant findings or confirm that development appears consistent with gestational age. Copies of select images can also be provided for personal keepsake purposes.

Gender Reveal Ultrasound

Early Determination of Fetal Sex

A gender reveal ultrasound, also referred to as a fetal sex determination scan, allows parents to learn the sex of their baby before birth when imaging conditions permit. While this ultrasound can be an exciting milestone for families, it also serves a clinical role in confirming normal fetal anatomy and growth.

When to Schedule

Fetal sex can typically be determined as early as 14 weeks of pregnancy, depending on fetal position and visibility during the exam. Many patients choose to confirm this information during a routine mid-pregnancy anatomy scan performed between 18 and 22 weeks.

Procedure Overview

The exam is conducted in the same manner as other obstetric ultrasounds. A sonographer will perform the scan and capture clear images of the fetal anatomy. The results can either be shared immediately following the scan or provided in a sealed envelope if you prefer to reveal the information at a later time.

Accuracy and Limitations

While ultrasound is a reliable method for determining fetal sex, certain factors—such as fetal positioning, gestational age, and maternal body habitus—can occasionally limit visibility. If the anatomy is not clearly visible, your provider may recommend a follow-up scan.

Safety and Professional Care

All ultrasounds are performed by trained medical professionals using FDA-approved equipment. These procedures are safe, noninvasive, and do not expose the patient or fetus to ionizing radiation.
