A 3D ultrasound provides a detailed, three-dimensional view of your baby, offering a clearer and more defined image than traditional 2D ultrasounds. This advanced imaging technology allows both patients and providers to visualize fetal features and movements with greater accuracy and depth.

While 2D ultrasounds remain the standard for most diagnostic purposes, 3D imaging can offer additional insight into fetal anatomy and development. These enhanced images may assist in evaluating certain facial structures, extremities, or the umbilical cord when clinically indicated. Many parents also appreciate the opportunity to view realistic images of their baby as part of a positive bonding experience during pregnancy.

A 3D ultrasound is performed in the same safe and noninvasive manner as a standard ultrasound. A trained sonographer will apply a conductive gel to the abdomen and use a transducer to capture multiple images that are then processed into a three-dimensional rendering. The procedure typically takes 20–30 minutes and does not involve radiation or any known risks to the mother or baby.

Optimal visualization for a 3D ultrasound generally occurs between 26 and 32 weeks of gestation. During this period, fetal structures are well developed, and sufficient amniotic fluid is present to produce high-quality images.

You will be able to review the images during your visit, and your provider can discuss any relevant findings or confirm that development appears consistent with gestational age. Copies of select images can also be provided for personal keepsake purposes.
