Nexplanon® (Subdermal Implant) Birth Control

What Is Nexplanon?

Nexplanon is a small, flexible, matchstick-sized rod placed just under the skin of your upper arm by one of our experienced providers at Iris Obstetrics & Gynecology. This long-acting reversible contraceptive (LARC) releases a steady dose of the hormone etonogestrel (a type of progestin) to prevent pregnancy for up to 3 years.

It’s one of the most effective and low-maintenance birth control options available—perfect for those who want reliable protection without the need for daily pills or frequent doctor visits.

With over 99% effectiveness, it’s a trusted choice for many women seeking long-term contraception.

How Nexplanon Works

Nexplanon protects against pregnancy by:

Preventing ovulation – no egg is released for fertilization.
Thickening cervical mucus – making it harder for sperm to reach the egg.
Thinning the uterine lining – reducing the likelihood of implantation.

What to Expect: Insertion & Removal

Insertion

Done in our office and takes just a few minutes.
The area on your upper arm is numbed before the implant is placed under the skin.
You may experience mild tenderness, bruising, or swelling for a few days afterward.

Removal

Also a quick, in-office procedure.
Once removed, your fertility typically returns quickly.
You can choose to have a new implant inserted immediately if you’d like to continue with this method.

Possible Side Effects

Many people experience little to no side effects, but it’s important to be aware of common possibilities:

Irregular periods or changes in menstrual flow
Spotting between periods
Headaches
Breast tenderness
Mood changes
Minor irritation or bruising at the insertion site

Less common risks may include blood clots, elevated blood pressure, or changes in cholesterol. Our team will review your health history to determine if Nexplanon is right for you.

Who Is Nexplanon For?

Nexplanon may be a good choice if you:

Want highly effective birth control for up to 3 years
Prefer not to take a daily pill
Want the option for a quick return to fertility after stopping
